Kanthan Aadal

April 19 @ 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM

A concise characterization of Thamil Kadavul (deity of the Thamil people), Murugan. According to Thamil literature dating back to the Sangam period (approx. 300 BCE-300 CE), Thamil land is divided into the following types: Marudam (agriculture), Neital (seashore), Mullai (forest/pasture), Palai (desert) and Kurinji(mountain/hill). The presiding deity over the Kurinji region was said to be Murugan. With references made to texts written by Arunagirinathar, Avvaiyar and a few other poets, through this recital we wish to show the different dimensions of Murugan and explore the resasoning as to why he is proclaimed to be a Thamil Kadavul.

The orchestra will be made up of artists based in Toronto. The nattuvanar for this evening will be Yalini’s Guru, Dr. Narthaki Nataraj, who will be conducting the dance recital. Professor Sudharshan Duraiyappah will be our compère and will be providing the audience with the meaning behind each dance piece and its signifiance in relation to Murugan.
