In Memory’s Wake: A Decade After Mullivaikkal

May 18 @ 12:00 PM - 7:00 PM

On May 18, 2019, we mark 10 years from the official end of the war in Sri Lanka. For some, this decade has felt tenuous, marred by attacks on churches and mosques on the island, most recently the Easter Sunday attacks in Batticaloa, Colombo, and Negombo. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who served as Defence Secretary during the height of the war, is now seeking presidency, while facing new US-filed lawsuits alleging torture and murder.

What does meaningful peace and justice look like in this afterlife of mass death and dispossession? Join us as our panelists and performers lead us through critical reflections on activism and art, law and nationalism, reflection and resistance.

Speakers and performers include:
– Bhi Bhiman (musician, San Francisco)
– D’Lo (actor, Los Angeles)
– Geetha Sukumaran (writer, Toronto)
– Prasanna Balasundaram (lawyer, Downtown Legal Services)
– Sutha Nadarajah (professor, SOAS University of London)
– Sylvia MacAdam (Cree, Founder of Idle No More & law professor)

Light refreshments will be served.

This event is free, but space is limited. Please RSVP: http://inmemoryswake.eventbrite.com
