Let’s Talk Genocide

May 4 @ 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Free

The catastrophic events of May 2009 still haunts the minds of Tamils across the world. At the height of the genocide of Eelam Tamils, innocent Tamil civilians were lured into government-declared “no-fire zones” and intentionally bombed using heavy weapons. Informed sources put the civilian death toll to be over 120,000. 10 years on, Eelam Tamils’ rights continue to be violated.

Currently, the situation for Eelam Tamils in Sri Lanka is very bleak. The attacks that took place on Easter Sunday are only a reminder that the island is far from being a ‘land of paradise’ for ethnic and religious minorities. Moreover, the military occupation of the Tamil homeland has made it nearly impossible for Eelam Tamils to advance their political aspirations and advocate their basic democratic rights. State organized “land grabs” have accelerated to further colonize the Tamil homeland. Tamils all over the island continue to live in fear of persecution and uncertainty. The prospects of Sri Lanka addressing the political aspirations of the Tamils are becoming dim by the day.

Tamil Youth Organization – Canada along with Tamil Student Associations across the GTA will host a documentary screening of the new film, Sri Lanka and the search for justice, ten years on and a discussion about the ongoing genocide Eelam Tamils continue to face.

Please join us on May 4, 2019 at University of Toronto Scarborough Campus from 2:00 to 5:00 PM.
